Parent Message 9-4-22
Posted on 09/04/2022

Dear Falcon Families,

It was a lot of fun welcoming back our students and getting the 2022-23 school year off to a strong start. Our Week of Welcome was a huge success. I want to thank our ASB students for their amazing leadership and hard work in making this first week a lot of fun. My favorite was the dunk tank :) A reminder that tomorrow, Monday September 5th there is no school due to the Labor Day holiday. Our Fall Open house will be Wednesday, September 14th from 5 - 6:30pm. Details are being finalized so I will send out the information next week once it is ready. In today’s update, I’ve included information about visitor parking, a Google Form for parents to nominate themselves to serve as representatives on our Site Governance Team (SGT), information for the Wednesday College Series, and more. See below for the latest updates as of 9-4-22.

* Please forward this message to your child’s email account so they have all the latest info.

Visitor Parking

Visitors can utilize the two white curb spots that are in front of the theater or park in the lot that is in front of the school (on your right as you pull in). Please do not drop off or pick up your students in this lot during the busy drop off and pick up times before and after school. See this SRHS Visitor Parking Map for a visual.

Open House

Open House this year will be in person (yay) from 5pm - 6:30pm on campus. The details are still being finalized, so I will send full details out next week.

AFJROTC Continues to Shine

Members of our AFJROTC made the front page of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association newsletter. Check it out: SRCA September Issue.

SRHS School Committees and Parent Volunteers

School Site Council (SSC) meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 3:45pm while Site Governance Team (SGT) Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 3:45pm. This year, we have zero parent vacancies for SSC (all parents from last year are returning) and three parent vacancies for SGT.  Please complete this Google Form: SRHS School Committees and Parent Volunteers if you are interested in being a part of one or both of these committees. Also included in the Google Form are options to indicate if you are interested in participating in other, non-election groups/events such as the English Learner Advisory Council and No Place for Hate sponsored activities. I will take the names submitted for SSC and SGT and create an electronic ballot to be sent out next week for both SSC and SGT elections.

SRHS School Committees for Students

This year, we have three student openings for School Site Council (SSC) and one student opening for Site Governance Team (SGT). I will be preparing a Google Form for students to sign up and send that through the “class of” Google Classrooms. Students, keep an eye out for that and please volunteer. Student voice is exceptionally important on these committees!

Wednesday College Series

The Scripps Ranch High School Foundation is excited to announce the return of The Wednesday College Series on September 14, 2022.  Students are invited  to come to the Library at lunch from 1:05-1:35pm to visit with colleges.  All grade levels are welcome to attend.  College Representatives from the following campuses will be here on September 14, 2022: DigiPen Institute of Technology, FIDM: Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Gonzaga University, Oregon State University, Penn State University, Syracuse University, and Washington University in St. Louis.  For more information about this and other college preparation information, please visit the Scripps Ranch High School Foundation College Corner:  https://srhsfoundation.org/college-corner

Picture Makeup Dates and Library Information

Students will receive their Gerardy Photography proofs during their Advisory class next week and families will be notified by school messenger on the day proofs are distributed.  Your student will bring home an order form along with a special individual code.

If you were unable to take pictures at Kickoff, there will be make-up picture days in the staff dining room (the room connected to the cafeteria between the theater and admin building). Below are the dates:

September 12, 2022 - 8:45AM to 3:30PM

September 30, 2022 - 9:00AM to 1:00PM

See the following link for details: https://sites.google.com/sandi.net/i-missed-srhs-kick-off-2022-23/home

Student Chromebooks

It is important for students to bring their laptop (either district issued Chromebook or personal laptop) every day so they can fully participate in their class lessons. We have a very small amount to loan out (maybe between 4 - 6 total) so it is important that students bring their own daily.

Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up - Reminder

At Scripps Ranch High, traffic during pick-up and drop-off times has been a problem since our school has “one way in and one way out.” In order to limit traffic as much as possible, we are asking parents/guardians to drop off their students in designated locations on the East Side of Falcon Way, Scripps Lake Drive, or Treena Street. See this Link: Student Drop-Off & Pick-Up for details.

Emissions Equipment Notification

The Air Pollution Control District is responsible for notifying school(s) within a 1000 square feet radius about proposed emissions equipment. They have asked schools to distribute an AB 3205 notice to students and parents/guardians. See the following links:

AB 3205 Statutes

Counseling Updates

New Counselor Caseloads: Counselor caseloads have changed slightly to best serve our student population this year. Please note which counselor will be working with your student in the 2022-23 school year. https://www.srhscounseling.com/who-is-my-counselor

Counselor Availability: Counselors are available to meet with students during passing periods and lunch time in front of the counseling office.Students do not need an appointment to get assistance at those times. If a student needs to schedule an appointment at another time, they can request that during those times as well.

Stay Up To Date: Visit the counseling website for important information and upcoming dates, srhscounseling.com. For those who use Instagram we encourage you to join the counseling Instagram page @ srhs.counseling

Class Schedules: Counselors met with students every day last week to make corrections to schedules and work on unfulfilled course request changes. Students came on a drop-in basis with no appointments necessary. Classes are now set.

College Classes: If your student is enrolled in a CCAP course through the high school and has any questions regarding their course/s, they should contact the CCAP program directly. [email protected]

UC Scout: Our registrar, Janay Lamar, is waiting to receive the UC Scout grades earned through the Level Up Program. The anticipated arrival is mid-September. Once she has received the grades, we will advertise how a student can request to have the classes added to the transcript. We do not automatically add the classes because we have students who do not want the grades included on their high school transcript. Only UC Scout classes taken through the district’s Level Up Program can be added to the transcript. If a student takes the class on their own it will not get added to the district transcript, but it can still be added to a student’s college application.

CSU College Night: After two years of hosting virtual events, representatives from all 23 CSU campus are happy to be back in person to meet with students and get them excited about their college future. This event is free and a great opportunity for students to learn key information regarding admission requirements, the Cal State Apply application, financial aid and more. The event will be in San Diego on Thursday, September 29th at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina San Diego, CA from 6:30 P.M. - 8:30 P.M. Click here for more information and to register.

Financial Aid 101: September 7th at 6:00 P.M. Cal-SOAP is offering a one-hour webinar targeted to 12th grade students and families to help them understand the financial aid process for college and the senior-year timeline. It will cover what information and documents are needed to fill out a FAFSA/CADAA form. It will also share information about grants, loans, and work study. Attend to learn and get your questions answered from the experts! Click here to register. Click here to view the Cal-SOAP website to see all future events.

Seniors: We understand that college and college applications are on the mind of many seniors. Counselors will be supporting this process through a presentation, one-on-one meetings, application labs, and providing informational materials on how to navigate the application process (e.g. transcript requests, letter of recommendation requests, etc.). Please reference the Senior Page on the counseling website for information about the supports and important upcoming dates. Also, if your student has an Instagram account, please encourage them to join the counseling Senior Class Instagram page.  @ srhsseniorvision_2023
