SRHS Weekly Update as of 1-24-21

Dear Falcon Families,

Tomorrow starts the beginning of Quarter 3. Students will now be back with the teachers they had during Quarter 1. If they haven’t done so already, teachers will send notification to students either by email, School Messenger, or a message through their Learning Management System informing them of the Zoom information for tomorrow’s classes. I will also include the Learning Management System grid in this update so students can confirm they have added their teachers’ Learning Management System. We’re excited to begin the second half of our school year and hope to return onsite in some capacity during this second half. Here are the latest updates as of 1-24-21

* Please forward this message to your child’s email account so they have all the latest info. ASB will also include blurbs from my weekly messages on their Instagram @scrippsranchasb and through the SRHS News page.

Superintendent Update

This week it was announced that Superintendent Cindy Marten has been nominated by the Biden administration for United States Deputy Secretary of Education. With Superintendent Marten’s transition, the Board announced Tuesday that Dr. Lamont Jackson will lead San Diego Unified School District as Interim Superintendent through December 2021.

Final Quarter 2 Grades

Final Quarter 2 grades will be available to view on Friday, January 29th via the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Due to the school closure, report cards will not be sent home.

Zoom Information for Monday

As I stated above, on or before Monday morning, students will receive a message from their Quarter 3 teachers informing them of their Zoom information. The message will come via email, School Messenger, or Google Classroom/Canvas.

Learning Management System (LMS) Grid

Parents received a previously sent link with this information.

Students who had Mrs. Hockmuth or Mrs. Weber Periods 1, 2 during Quarter 1

As you know, Mrs. Weber, after many years of outstanding teaching, retired in December. Because Mrs. Weber taught AP English Language periods 1 and 2 Quarter 1, we wanted to make sure we had a teacher who was experienced in teaching AP classes ready to take over those classes. For this reason, Mrs. Hockmuth will be teaching Mrs. Weber’s period 1 and 2 AP English Language classes during Quarter 3 and Ms. Wang will be teaching Mrs. Hockmuth’s period 1 and 2 English classes during Quarter 3. See this Link: Intro Video for Sara Wang for an introduction to Ms. Wang.

 ASB Website

Members of our ASB Tech/Publicity team have been working extremely hard to create an accessible platform where students can read about the latest updates and find ways to get involved. Here is the Link: Scripps Ranch ASB Website. In addition to important websites like Naviance, Counseling, and Peer tutoring, our website features all of our clubs as well as google forms where anyone can submit feedback/questions to ASB. The SRHS News page on the site is an extremely useful page for all students; it is updated weekly by ASB with the most recent information including test dates, fundraisers, and other opportunities. Additionally, students (and parents) are able to sign up to receive email updates whenever new posts are published. Please encourage your students to visit this site and continuously check it for new updates.

SAT Update – from the College Board

Please see this Link: SAT Update as of 1-19-21 for an important update from the College Board.

Counseling Updates

Articulation for the 2021-2022 School year:

The articulation process for choosing next year’s classes will begin February 1st with the current 9th graders and will take approximately two months to go through all four grade levels.  For information about the articulation process and start dates for each grade level, please go to the Articulation page on the counseling website.

Now is a good time for students to speak with their teachers about recommendations for next year.  We are in the process of updating the course descriptions for the February 1st start date, however, you can still access this year’s course descriptions as a reference. https://www.srhscounseling.com/course-descriptions

Seniors: Mid-Year Reports: This is a reminder that mid-year transcripts will be sent to all colleges in which an initial transcript was requested. Mid-year transcripts will be sent out in the first 2 weeks of February, once the district has added 2nd quarter grades to the transcripts. Since initial and mid-year transcripts are not traditionally requested by CSU and UC schools prior to accepting admissions, we will NOT automatically send to any CSU or UC school.  If you do need a transcript sent to a CSU or UC school before you have accepted their offer, you must request that on Naviance.

CCAP Miramar Classes:

  • If you are taking a CCAP Miramar class through Scripps Ranch High School in the Spring, classes will start on February 1st.  Prior to the class starting, you will receive a message directing you to access their mySDCCD accounts.  You may not see the new class in your Canvas Portal until the course officially starts. See Link: View Schedule on mySDCCD for information about how to check your schedule in my SDCCD, as well as other helpful information.
  • Miramar is providing supports to help you prepare for the spring semester.  See Link: CCAP MOU Flyer for more information.
  • Students taking Miramar classes can come in on Monday or Wednesday next week from 1 – 3:30pm to return current textbooks and check out next semester’s textbook and web access code. Students should return Miramar Semester 1 textbooks when picking up Semester 2 textbooks. Please see this Link: Item Pick-up for the safety protocol.

FAFSA & California Dream Act:

There are 5 weeks left to submit your FAFSA or Dream Act application for the March 2nd deadline. The purpose of these applications is to get assistance with college financial aid for both community and four-year colleges.

Earned a D or F in a core subject course 1st or 2nd quarter this year:

Reach out to your counselor immediately to get signed up to remediate your course if you meet any of the following:

  • Failed a course you need for graduation because the course is required for graduation or if you are low on credits and need the class to meet the 44-credit graduation requirement
  • If you have a low GPA and may fall below the 2.0 cumulative GPA required for graduation.
  • If you applied to a 4-year college and they will not accept any D's or F's in the senior year.

College bound students with disabilities and attention challenges:

The University of Arizona offers a support program for college students with learning disabilities and attention challenges. The SALT Center (Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques) is accepting applications now for the upcoming academic year. High school students who are interested learning more about the program and application process can sign up to attend a group presentation designed for prospective students and their families. Taste of SALT features a panel of current student ambassadors and is held most Mondays and Wednesdays. Sign Up here

Picking up Classroom Materials

For students who need to pick up classroom materials, see this Link: Item Pick-up for the dates and the protocol.

That’s all for today. Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Matt Lawson, Ed.D
