SRHS Weekly Update as of 11-15-20

Dear Falcon Families,

I hope you are enjoying your Sunday evening and had a good weekend. This past week, I received some exciting news about the first step for some athletes returning on-site to practice. I’ll share those details as well as other updates below. Here are the latest updates as of 11-15-20.

No School November 23rd – 27th

There is no school the week of November 23rd. I hope you and your families have a restful Thanksgiving and are able to take a much needed break from all that is going on.

Return to Conditioning for Some Athletic Teams

See this Link: Athletic Update as of 11-13-20 for an exciting update about athletics. Teams that participate in most CIF-approved outdoor “Season 1 Sports” will be allowed to start holding on-campus outdoor workouts. Starting this coming week, three sports are allowed to begin practicing using Scripps Ranch High facilities and following all safety measures. These sports are (1) Football, (2) Cross Country and (3) Field Hockey. Here are some further details:

Why these teams:

  • Football is a safety concern with regards to other schools lifting weights and conditioning for months and then expecting our students to play against with 10 days of preparation. All conditioning access can happen safely outside.
  • Allowing for Field Hockey to condition will meet Title IX compliance and is an outside sport so all conditioning access can happen safely outside.
  • Cross Country consists of both boys and girls, is an outside sport so all conditioning access can happen safely outside and will be low maintenance as just the track is utilized.

Why not these teams:

  • B&G Water Polo: No access to City of SD pools for conditioning.
  • B&G Volleyball: We do not have access to our indoor facilities.
  • B&G Badminton: We do not have access to our indoor facilities.
  • Competitive Cheer: We do not have access to our indoor facilities (gym and dance rooms). The cheer team that is currently active is sideline cheer.

While I understand there may be some teams that feel they are missing out, this is great news as it is step 1 for us to return additional athletes and return to some sense of normalcy. When we implement this return to practice safely, it could lead to more and more teams being able to return, and that is exciting!! We are still in the process of developing a site-specific safety protocol so our SRHS athletes will not return until later in the week or after Thanksgiving break to ensure they are practicing in a safe manner. Communication to athletes about this return will occur through the coaching staff.

Theatre Production: Almost, Main by John Cariani

The student actors and technicians of the Falcon Playhouse have been hard at work since September in preparation of presenting to the Scripps Ranch Community their virtually staged adaptation of Almost, Maine by John Cariani. After all the hard work, the Falcon Playhouse invites you to come see our LIVE virtual production!

Almost, Maine is a play that explores the love, loss, longing, and hope in relationships. The show takes place over the course of one unusual winter night in a small town by the name of Almost, Maine. The northern lights glow in the night sky, as the residents of Almost find themselves facing unexpected realizations about their past, present, and future relationships. In this series of short, absurdist, and often humorous vignettes, Almost’s residents attempt to understand and control their emotions, all too reminiscent of what one experiences in their own personal life.

Our show runs from Nov. 19 & 20 at 6:30pm and Nov. 21 at 2pm.

Tickets per household are $7 - Link to purchase tickets can be found here. (https://www.falconplayhouse.com/upcoming-events) After purchase of ticket, patron will receive an email with info on how to stream our show!

Counseling Updates  https://www.srhscounseling.com/

12th Grade:

This week is the last week for college application labs. Counselors will answer college application questions and review completed applications on Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 PM- 3:00 PM. Information for how to log on to the college application lab will be sent to their student email account on Monday. Please remind your senior student to go to the Senior page on Counseling website for information about the college application process, directions for how to request transcripts and letters of recommendation, and stay informed on other helpful senior information.  Once the labs are over, students can still reach out to their counselor if they need additional help with their applications.

IMPORTANT REMINDER! University of California (UC) applications are due November 30thand the California State University (CSU) applications are due December 4th. Do not wait until the last minute to submit applications in case you have questions from the admissions office (wait times are long near the deadline) or if the system has problems accepting applications with so many students submitting their applications right before the deadline.

Letters of Recommendation:  If you have already requested for letters of recommendation to be sent by your teacher and add more colleges at a later date, you will need to email the teachers to let them know you would like them to forward their letter.
