Back to SchoolParent Message 8-23-20

Dear Falcon Families,

It was great seeing many of you during the Virtual Family Forum this past Friday. School starts August 31st so I hope you enjoy this final week of summer with your families. We are going to do everything we can to make this school year a successful and enjoyable one for you and your children. We look forward to welcoming students back and connecting with them virtually. Here are the latest updates as of 8-23-20.

Master Schedule Update

This weekend we are working on the final cleanups for the master schedule. By Tuesday or Wednesday of this week we will open up the PowerSchool Student Portal so students can see their schedule for this year. I will send an email once it is open. On the same day we open the portal, I will email a Google Form to families that can be completed to request class changes (similar to what we have done in previous years during Kickoff). All class change requests need to be sent through the Google Form (please not by email) so counselors can work on honoring those requests.

Family Welcome Week August 31st – September 4th

The week of August 31st will serve as a Family Welcome Week. During this week, students will not attend to their assigned classes. Instead, students and families will be invited to complete asynchronous district provided training modules to prepare for online learning. The online learning modules include:

Technology modules provide basic levels of Chromebook support such as: Signing Into Your Chromebook and Chromebook Device Care. While other modules cover Signing Into Online Learning Platforms through Clever

Health & Safety Requirement Modules provide families with informational guidelines on topics such as Handwashing, Masks, and Information on the Transfer of COVID-19, in order to build common understanding of best practices.

Additional Welcome Week topics include: Social Emotional & Wellness and Family Resources.

On these days, students will also be required to complete two 60-min learning modules per day in ELA, math, social science, history or VAPA. Students will create an interactive notebook using Google Slides that they can share with their teacher (these notebooks will not be graded). The completion of modules will count as student attendance for that week. The student schedule for these training modules is still in draft form so it will be shared out at a later date. Along with the asynchronous training modules, students and teachers will get a chance to connect for one hour each day. Here is the schedule where students will connect with their teachers:

Kickoff

Kickoff will be September 1st – 4th. Please click this (Link) for the Kickoff protocol. During their designated day students will pick up their Chromebook and textbooks. SDUSD has put a hold on all school pictures so school pictures will be taken at a later date when it is safe to do so. School ID’s will also be distributed later when it is safe to take pictures. All students should check out a Chromebook if they have not previously checked one out from the district. If a student has already checked out a district Chromebook, they will keep it and use that for this year. If you have your own personal computer and would like to use that, that is ok, but please still check out a district Chromebook since there may be district software in the future (I’ll send more info on this if/when it comes out) that can only be used on a district Chromebook. As a reminder, textbooks will only be distributed for those classes that require it. For those classes where students can access instructional materials online, a textbook will not be distributed.

You’ll notice quarters 1, 2 and 4 are each 9 weeks while quarter 3 is 10 weeks. Making quarter 3 10 weeks makes up for the Welcome Week during quarter 1, aligns closer to the community college calendar and enables our grading period to more easily align with the NCAA transcript deadlines.

Online Learning Expectations

We are finalizing an addendum to our SRHS handbook that focuses on online learning. This addendum will include norms and expectations that will make the online learning experience a more successful one. I will send the link to this addendum once it is finalized.

Student Emails

Over the course of the last few months we learned it is important that teachers have the ability to email students directly to communicate about assignments or other classroom items. We have turned on the student district emails to enable teachers to email students directly. A student’s district email is their student ID, followed by @stu.sandi.net. Example) 123456@stu.sand.net. This year, the expectation will be that students check their district email regularly for communication from their teachers.

Family Technology Support

During the course of the school year if you are in need of district technology support, from Monday – Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm you can call 619-732-1400 for Chromebook issues or 619-260-2460, press option 1 for Wi-Fi or hotspot issues.

Those are all the latest updates as of today. We look forward to a great start to the 2020-21 school year.

Sincerely,

Matt Lawson, Ed.D
